xcerpts from the e-mail and notes we have received about Guerber’s Histories:
“If only the population of our country today had this depth of historical knowledge! These books are intended for early elementary students, and yet, only a small fraction of educated adults would have a background to compete with these. They will be beneficial to all family members … and will be a strong addition to a child’s moral development in his formative years.”
– Martha Robinson, read her detailed review for HomeschoolChristian.com
“These engaging narratives are richly detailed accounts of the lives and times of the most important people of the period, arranged chronologically. The people are placed within the context of their times, and their history is presented with interesting background information so that the entire narrative flows as a single, unbroken story.”
– Cindy Prechtel, Homeschooling from the Heart
“The writing style of Guerber is very engaging and easy to understand, and Nothing New Press has added maps, and some beautiful artwork.”
– Britta McColl, for Veritas Press
“The Guerber History books are exactly what I want my children to be reading! Because the books are written like a story, instead of just a bunch of boring facts, they capture my children’s attention very easily. It’s difficult to put the book down sometimes. I know that these histories are supposed to be geared for grammar-age students, but I have every intention of using them through high school – they are THAT informative and interesting. I see no reason to limit them to grades K-5 … I’m learning much of the information right alongside the children!”
– Kris Price of Classical Education 4 Me
“I’m so pleased to be able to introduce you to Christine Miller. Her books are used as main textbooks for our world history curriculum … these books would be a huge blessing for your family. Honestly, I can’t figure out which book I love best!”
– Anne Elliott for Homeschooling Torah
“Each book is written in a lively style that presents historical facts as interesting elements of a bigger story, not just useless data to be memorized.”
– Eli Evans, Exodus Books
“Skip the boring, tedious textbooks! Guerber brings history facts to life in story book fashion.”
– L. R., Amazon.com
“Christine Miller has made some very welcome changes to the older text, as well as added some other helpful features. I don’t usually prefer updated editions over originals, but in this case I really appreciate having the racist language of the time (red skins, white skins, savages, etc.) changed to language that I would not object to as part of my child’s vocabulary. Also, I love the new indexes, the timelines, the recommended reading lists which are keyed to the chapters in each book, and the updated accounts of the origins of peoples, which are now in line with evidence and Scripture, rather than the mistaken but prevailing view of Guerber’s day. In short, I have always loved Helene Guerber’s history books, and these new versions have all the changes I would have made to them myself if I’d ever had the time, yet they leave in all the parts that shouldn’t be changed. I recommend them all.”
– Sarah S.
“Originally written in the early 19th century, H.A. Guerber’s historical readers will give young children an exciting, narrative look at the human past. Writing from the conviction of biblical accuracy in all of history, events and cultures are dated according to the Bible and an emphasis on God’s sovereignty through Western history runs throughout. Children will appreciate the story-like style as they hear of the great men and civilizations in chapters that are easy to digest, though they still retain a large vocabulary.”
– Christianbook.com
“I love learning history but I could never understand it because I was never taught it chronologically. All the events would get jumbled up in my head. Christine Miller starts it out from the beginning of Creation and lays a wonderful solid foundation and builds up from there according to the Bible. Never have I ever had so much fun learning history until now.”
– Renee H.
“I really like these books because they are reprints from an earlier time so I trust them to be more accurate than most of today’s revised history books. … I like everything about them.”
– Joanna C.
“I received my books yesterday and I cannot tell you how pleased I am with them. The illustrations are beautiful. The time line and suggested readings are a wonderful addition. I can’t wait to get started reading these and incorporating them into my children’s history study.”
– Janet B.
