The Story of the Greeks

F

rom the first inhabitants of Greece through its incorporation as a province of the Roman Empire in 196 BC, The Story of the Greeks retells as an engaging narrative the the history of Ancient Greece and the stories of its famous leaders and philosophers. In 115 lessons, we learn of the Trojan War, the Rise of Sparta, the Democracy of Athens, the Grecian-Persian Wars, the Peloponnesian War, the Conquest of Alexander the Great, and much more. We meet the good and the just; the wicked and proud: Theseus, Achilles, Lycurgus, Draco, Solon, Leonidas, Pericles, Socrates, Dionysius, Demosthenes, to name just a few.

The Story of the Greeks In her preface, Miss Guerber writes, “This elementary history of Greece is intended for supplementary reading or as a first history text-book for young pupils. It is therefore made up principally of stories about persons; for, while history proper is largely beyond the comprehension of children, they are able at an early age to understand and enjoy anecdotes of people, especially of those in the childhood of civilization. At the same time, these stories will give a clear idea of the most important events that have taken place in the ancient world, and, it is hoped, will arouse a desire to read further. They also aim to enforce the lessons of perseverence, courage, patriotism, and virtue that are taught by the noble lives described.”

New edition of The Story of the Greeks being prepared!

The Story of the Greeks is temporarily out of stock while we prepare a new edition. The current edition, which is out of stock, is the 3rd edition. The new edition will include all the text of Guerber's history, with additional chapters at the beginning of the book on the rise of the Greeks from Japheth and the Tower of Babel dispersion, and the mythology of the Greeks from a corruption of the true history of the world recorded in Genesis. The new edition will also conclude with additional chapters covering the important events which occurred in Palestine during the reign of Alexander's generals, before the occupation by the Romans, which fulfilled Biblical prophecy.

As always, the new material will be illustrated with famous masterworks of Western Civilization, and will include maps. The Recommended Reading list will be expanded to incorporate the new chapters. We estimate we will have the new edition in stock by Jan 2009, but this is an estimation, and is subject to change. It is the best estimation we can provide at present. We are working hard to get the new edition done and back in stock as soon as possible. The new chapters are already written; the time- consuming part of preparing this new edition is redoing the index! Thank you for your patience!

February 2009 Update: The new edition of Greeks is nearly finished! It is our goal to have it to the printer's by the end of the month, which, if we are able to accomplish that, means the books will be shipping in early March!

May 2009 Update: The new edition of Greeks is ready to go to the printer's. But because the recession has impacted our business, we do not have the reserves we normally do to get the book printed. Therefore, we are going to take pre-orders for the new edition, and as soon as we have sold enough pre-orders, we will get the book printed and mail everyone's copy to them. So it is our plan, if pre-orders go well, to print the book at the end of June, but of course this depends on the pre-orders, and it may be much sooner than that (as well as a possibility it might be later, but we honestly think that is slim). Now, we recognize that people have been waiting for the book and might need it before the end of June. We are going to make the e-Book of Story of the Greeks available as well. We have been working on the technology to be able to offer e-Books for quite some time, and we are close to having that ready also, by the end of May at the latest.
